I'm going to do it again...give my opinion! No surprise if you know me! This time it is going to be what the internet had to say about the photography and editing trends from 2017 that were horrible. Again, this is according to the internet. Remember now, everybody is an expert on whatever the topic is at the time. I searched to see what different writers and websites had to say and now I am going to let you know what they had to say and how I feel about it.
Fake flooring, like the “Barnwood Rug” and using these rugs for both fake backdrops and flooring.
My take on it is I'm cheap! Use whatever you have or can afford as your backdrops and flooring. They don't have to be specified at the store or online as "flooring" or "backdrop". Heck, I've used a sheet as a background before! Babies in angel wings. Now my first thought was this has been done for years and I'm tired of seeing it. But there could be a case where a couple had lost a baby previously or had trouble conceiving or staying pregnant and they want to portray through the photo shoot with their new baby that it is a miracle or an angel in disguise. So I can't totally say this is a bad trend. ANY photos done on a railroad track. I 100% agree with this! Not only is overdone and dangerous but it's also ILLEGAL! Yes, you read that right, it is against the law. Railroad tracks are private property. Just because they are out in public doesn't make them public property. So if you are on them you are trespassing. People think abandoned ones are okay since they are abandoned but no, they are still owned by the railroad company and you are still trespassing. I live in Indiana and there was a story in April 2017, that a 19 year old aspiring model was killed. She was getting her pictures done on railroad tracks and she was able to move out of the path of an oncoming train but stepped into the path of another. In Indiana, in 2015, there were 11 people killed because they were trespassing on railroad tracks. In 2016, 7 people died. So PLEASE if you are the photographer and a client wants pictures on the railroad tracks tell them no and why. If they get mad about it, don't worry, you may have saved their life. Cake Smash. It may have been done hundreds of times but it's so cute! And now adults doing cake smashes is being done and it's awesome! I've shot both a 1 year old cake smash and an adult cake smash. The 1 year old was cute and funny but the adult one was just hilarious! Using a Victorian chair outdoors, usually in a field. I personally really like this look. It mixes something elegant with the outdoors. I can see if a photographer does it a lot then it may get old, but again I personally like the look. A newborn baby hanging in mid air typically by a sheet. It is kind of cute but I feel like it's been overdone. There are other ways of getting this look with out a sheet or some other type of fabric.
Maternity photos - the Father's hands making a heart on Mom's belly. I really can't believe this is still a thing! There has to be an alternative to this. I'm sure I could think of something if it wasn't so late at night. I KNOW with all the photographers out there at least 1 of us can come up with a different look.
Photographing the feet of the family. I do not like feet at all so photographing them straight on is just weird. Since I don't like feet it's also a little gross to me. If you REALLY want a picture of your families feet just buy a tripod and set your cell phone on a timer...please! Maternity photo - blocks spelling out the baby's name. I don't hate this but it's just way beyond it's years and so overdone . Since it's been done for so many years I'm sure as with the the Father's hands making a heart on Mom's belly we can surely find an alternative to this.
I know there a lot more. Some people may or may not agree with so there is really no way for me to possibly write about every one of them. Are there any that you have seen done way too much or that you may have read is overdone but you disagree with? If so, let me know.
